Cowabunga!

Unknown Artist

Flat geometric shapes, asymmetrical balance,  and monochromatic color scheme, with unity and containment established in the composition through a grid.
Unknown Artist
But would like to know the figure!

Horizontally directed shapes with cast shadows and dramatic lighting to emphasize texture on the figure's skin.  Contrast through color is established through accent colors of primary red and blue in the speedos that are in contrast to the muted orange, grays, and blues.
Hawaiian Island Creations Unknown Artist

Flat geometric abstract shapes with radial symmetry and containment.
Lucille Holling

Attached shadows create volume in an otherwise flat figure.  A complimentary color scheme is used with visual weight balanced with the vertical figure in between horizontal shapes.

From This is Los Angeles  Miroslav Sasek
1969

Flat geometric abstract shapes with split complimentary color scheme. Grouping of objects establishes unity in the composition and rhythm is created by repeating the same fish like shape in the background.

Illusion of Motion

Unknown Artist
2012

Vertically directed lines with complimentary color scheme.  Space is created through atmospheric perspective and motion is achieved in portraying a decisive moment.
John Stortz
Pen and Watercolor

Continuos curves with stippling and complimentary color scheme.  The illusion of space is created using   a vanishing point and motion is attributed to a kinesthetic response with the tongue hanging out and a decisive moment in a pie dropping.
Get Me Out Now Fast Darin Shuler
2009

Continuous curves with invented texture and containment of space emphasized as the edges of the paper.  Motion is conveyed through fragmentation and multiplication in various scenes of spilling or tightening of muscles in the figures throughout the composition.
Hooks Jolby
2010

Vertically oriented lines, organic shapes ,with invented and representational textures with analogous color scheme.  Symmetrical balance is emphasized through using the same length in all three figures with motion suggested in a before and after context. For example, the sagging volumes suggest movement had occurred.

Unknown Artist

Complimentary color scheme with dramatic side lighting and asymmetrical balance.  Motion is suggested as a kinesthetic response, as seen with the water from in the figure's head in the foreground.

Illusion of Space

Sirens James Jean
Graphite and Digital 2011
A split complimentary color scheme and organic curvilinear volumes in the figures in the foreground, with flat geometric shapes in the background arranged in radial symmetry.  A dynamic space is enhanced in the background through a vanishing point, amplified perspective,  and layering.
Unknown Artist

Analogous color scheme with flat abstract geometric shapes.  A One-point perspective is used and layered space is achieve by using solid black shapes  in the foreground.
From Justice Alex Ross
2005

Split complimentary color scheme with containment through use of grouping and vertical frames. A dynamic illusion of space is seen in both frames, however, the figure on the left is in a three point perspective, while the figure on the right is in a one point amplified perspective.

 Aaron Schorr
Paper 2002

Primary and secondary colors with flat geometric shapes. Rhythm is established through a pattern of curvilinear shapes in the background. Layering of figures creates an illusion of space.
Jantzen Advertisement, Unknown Artist

Complimentary color scheme with horizontal symmetry in the placement of the figures in the foreground. A bright Red is emphasized in the swim shorts of the male figure and the red hair of woman.  An amplified two point perspective is used to create an illusion of space.

Complimentary color scheme with centricity and symmetrical balance.
Bathing Soldiers Dmitry Zhilinsky
1959

Variety in triadic color scheme with Gestalt psychology present with greater emphasis on figure proximity and grouping.
Strawberry Luna
2000

Horizontal curvilinear lines with abstract geometric shapes and  rhythm established in lines in the foreground.
Sailor Jerry

Curvilinear lines, complimentary color scheme, symmetrical balance, and containment.

Voyage to the Edge of the World Unknown Artist
1976

Organic curvilinear lines, representational shapes with triadic color scheme, and movement throughout with a focal point at the whale's mouth.
Unknown Artist

Organic representational shapes with close proximity to emphasize relatedness among the figures.
Monterey Bay Aquarium  Unknown Artist

Flat, geometric, abstract fused shapes with radial symmetry and monochromatic color scheme.
Unknown Artist

Monochromatic color scheme, asymmetrical balance, and centricity established with the human figure in the dramatic lighting
